What I have discovered about ‘personal secret’ is that lots of people feel the stress out about keeping their secret and such stresses emerge as physical and mental problems.

So I suggested a service design for confessing their secret through the 'Beans salon' service which is based on a temporary tattoo service.

This is provided as mental healing therapy so people can escape from stress out in the salon.

Spring term of MA Expanded Practice at Goldsmiths University.

Individual project.

Nowadays people have secrets which are come from personal experience or relationships in society.

These are a more personal secret that directly affects you or minimal damage one, or it is about other people’s gossip. Moreover, lots of people struggle to keep these secrets and these tries caused a physical and mental problem.

BACKGROUND & GOAL

DISCOVERY OF THE CONCEPT

Survey & Desk Research

I surveyed how people think about keeping their secrets actually with 48 people who came from 11 countries through the 8 questions.

Which method is for understanding the story of how to deal with a personal secret from various cultural perspectives.

By mapping the various way of dealing with a personal secret, looking for proper direction of the concept

Based on this researches, I did concept ideation.

Lost the way...

I was concerned that I can make a common resolution for getting rid of the negative side of keeping secrets for everyone.

Because the secret is very comparable, so people have a different perspective about that.

So, when I designed one common service for people, I was not sure how people satisfied that.

I decided to deviate from the direction that I should come up with the right answer.

I thought it also can be valuable that I suggest a new experience to people who want to release the worries about a secret

Lots of people have a similar experience

Orson Scott Card, who is professor of Southern Virginia University, mentions that

“Stranger is usually the safest people to confide in – if they do not know anybody you know”.

So, when they are telling the secret to a stranger, they do not need to worry about spread out their secret to an intimate person.
So, I researched whether there are occasions when people share the secret or information with a stranger.

Concept

People could share their secrets with a stranger through the service platform.

By spill the secret to a stranger in the designed environment, which service can help to make a mental relax and sympathy for them,

even though it is not a precise way of solving a problem.

INSIGHT & CONCEPT

[ Inspiration ]

Women's Salon culture

Usually, women go to Salon for having a makeover of their appearance,

they feel mental healing through changing their style and chat with others.

It helps to relieve their stress by sharing it with others, even though there is no solution even though but just listening.

How about planning a new type of salon for listening to secret?

The 'beans salon' provides an experience for people to confess or share their secret more freely.

Visitors can also receive tattoo services on the healing of secrets at the salon, as well as it helps them relax and heal mentally.

OUTPUT

The experience in the salon will proceed with the 'secret teller' as person to person.

Part 1.

Who we are & What we do

We are listening to the customer’s secret and provide psychology ritual service.

Our brand story is that ‘Beans’ represent secrets when people say 'I spill the beans',

which means that spilling the secret to others.

We provide 14 types of secrets and each it has its symbol which is inspired by plant seeds (bean).

Salon’s main element is a temporary tattoo, and the customer can confess (express) their secret through it on their body.

1. Tattooing in a secret part: Confess the secret to yourself.

2. Tattooing in a conspicuous part: Share and express the secret to others.

The customer can understand that when a symbol is disappeared their worries and stress also went as well,

you do not need to keep your secret in the body forever.

Part 2.

What specific service can we provide ?

This course runs 10 minutes approximately.

It has four steps which are ‘Meditation’, ‘Secrets Search’, ‘Design’ and ‘Finish & Relax’.

[ Secret teller's rules ]

1. The customer and the secret teller should have a 1: 1 therapy.

2. Always listen to care what the customer is saying.

3. Avoid personal conversations between storytellers.

4. Do not speak or act to make customers feel uncomfortable.

5. Customers' saying is unconditionally confidential during the ritual.

Step 01.

MEDITATION

The first step is a meditation for finding your secret which you want to confess.

Secret teller going to play some music for relaxing and burn the incense stick for meditation.

You can think about the secret what you want to confess during meditation.

Step 02.

SECREAT SEARCH

Secret teller going to show the 14 secret cards on the desk, and you can choose the one secret what you want.

And they do not require the answer about detail story of your secret, so you can choose one with a true heart.

Step 03.

Design

Secret teller matches the card which you choose with the secret symbol and they explain about meaning of the secret symbol.

The symbol consists of flower and fruit, those represent the secret.

Secret teller going to show the symbol chart which you choose, you can match the symbol on your body through the transparent part.

( The symbol chart helps you more easily to imagine when you get a tattoo on your body )

If you want to confess to yourself, you can get a tattoo on the secrecy part of the body.

If you want to share your secret with others, you can get a tattoo on the conspicuous part of the body.

Step 04.

Finish & Relax

In the last, secret teller going to attach the tattoo to your body.

First,

they going to clean up on that part using toner.

Second,

they stick the tattoo paper and cover the water tissue

on the paper for 20 sec, you can speak your secret in your heart during that sec.

Last,

they going to wipe the water on your body.

The tattoo takes 3-7 days depends on the body condition.

You are worried about secret will be disappeared after that period.

I did 'Beans salon' service for student and tutor as 'secret teller' while project exhibition, the display concept was a fortune-teller as it thought that it goes well with Beans salon key concept; mental healing, secret ritual, communication, tattoo and so on.

During the exhibition, I provided tattoo service to over 15 tattoos in a day and I could listen to lots of their opinion about keeping the secret through this service.

The result of my activity was successful, lots of people visited my salon but they had to turn back their's step.

they gave a positive reaction forward to relieve the stress of having secret, and most of client said that it was very great opportunity to think about my hidden secret which I did not recognize through the ritual process.

' When I see the person who has the tattoo which is same as mine, I feel there is a strong emotional bond with that person '

' It was an opportunity to think about my secret again.'

' The tattoo design is pretty, so I just want to do it in fashion.'
