UNDERSTANDING

As one of the pataphysics research workshops in Goldsmiths University, utopia ouvroir investigates utopia in cultural aspects and suggests new measuring tools specifically designed for the utopia, based on Asian and African cultures, which have not been discovered and developed. Thus, the aim of the programme in this ouvroir is to research each country’s own utopia, in a cultural narrative. It also compares the features of each utopia, especially comparing western perspective utopia and the other utopias and emphasise the differences between those.

The key spatial feature of Chunghakdong is that the locations are in multiple places in a mountain.

According to this feature, residents of Chunghakdong should be the ones who are willing to travel and wandering in their life.

In ancient Korea, the person who has this certain kind of lifestyle is called the one who’s born with the fate of Yeokma.

Yeokma refers to the fate of someone who has the intense urge of moving, pursuing transition or transformation in their own life frequently.

Yeokma-sal (wanderlust) ; Measuring Application for VISA Test of Utopia

In the past, the way to measure this YEOK MA was using GWAN SANG which is similar to face reading.

Therefore, if someone would like to know about their future, they should see  GWAN SANG readers and show them their face to predict their future. We suggest a new application for measuring the ‘YEOK MA SAL’ without GWAN SANG reader.

These measurement applications can be reinterpreted a systematic way of  choosing

'Residence of Korean Utopia'.

PROCESS

We made the standard of the measuring system and made up various prototype of measuring tools.

Which are consist of brow bone, cheek, philtrum, ear, chin shape and palm line.

OUTPUT

1.  Brow Bone

Measure the hight of your brow bone by using shadow.  (Wider shadow: Get high score)

2.  Cheek bone

Height of cheek bone. (Higher cheek bone: Get high score)

3.  Philtrum

Measure the straightness of philtrum. (Curvy philtrum : Get  score)

4.  Earlobe

Measure the length of earlobe. (Wider earlobe: Get high score)

5.  Chin Shape

Measure the angle of your chin (Narrow angle : Get high score)

6.  Palm line

Measure the existence of specific lines. (Existence of ‘Yeokma’line: Get score)

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, although many academics and designers have researched utopia (Michael, 2015), discussions are mostly limited to western perspectives and urbanisations such as city development and planning (Solinis, 2006).
Therefore, utopia ouvroir aims to investigate utopia without rejecting the eastern perspective, while retaining western views of east culture. The recent investigation of ouvroir represents that utopia can be illustrated in various forms based on culture, as each culture pursues different values.

For further study, the research could also be conducted in different culture narratives.
The main features would change and vary by its cultural characteristic.
Thus, the next step of this research can be based on Asia or perhaps in Africa.
